D22: Snapline. Anybody still doubting the maturity of the local rock scene needs to see Snapline. They pull barbed wire through grunge rock without asking for your forbearance. They share the bill with punkabilly rockers, The Scoff, and snappy Britpoppers, Hedgehog. RMB30. 9pm.
Mao Livehouse: PK14 & Submarine. Hands down Beijing’s best indie band, PK14, conserving the lo-fi ethic at the core of an oeuvre ranging from stripped punk to emo wailing. Submarine, might be the gem to catch. They’re mature, having been around five years and with MIDI appearances and a couple albums under their belts, they are a hit away from being stars on the seen. RMB40. 8:15pm.
Star Live: Maximilian Hecker. Don’t dismiss this singer songwriter as Germany’s version of Coldplay. Hecker, a star in his native Germany, is a maudlin bard of romantic yearning bearing simple melodies upon waves of emotion. This is his second go-round in the mainland and he has legions of fans here. RMB 260, RMB 180 in advance (advance sales closes at noon on July 16). 8:30pm.
What Bar: Incisors. Gigging in Beijing for just over a year, this lo-fi grunge three piece makes you nostalgic for the days when the best music took place in your friend’s garage. RMB 25 (includes a beer). 9pm.
Stone Boat Bar: Woodie Alan. Alan Paul, Woody Wu and Dave Loevinger do covers of classic rock faves and madcap blues, peppered with dobro, tenor sax and some congas. Free. 9:30pm.
